Creotech Quantum has been awarded a €2.33 million ($2.66 million USD) contract by the European Space Agency (ESA) to engineer high-performance Superconducting Nanowire Single-Photon Detectors (SNSPDs). The initiative is set to span a 24-month development cycle, focusing on the creation of hardware capable of withstanding the rigorous demands of space environments.
As the lead entity in the consortium, Creotech Quantum will manage the end-to-end lifecycle of the project, including the initial design, manufacturing processes, and rigorous validation of the detectors. The primary objective is to achieve Technology Readiness Level 5 (TRL 5), a critical milestone that signifies a prototype has been validated in a relevant environment.
These SNSPDs are poised to play a pivotal role in the infrastructure of European quantum communication. Specifically, they are intended to support quantum key distribution (QKD) networks, which provide ultra-secure communication channels. Furthermore, the technology will be instrumental in facilitating deep-space optical communication, bridging the gap between terrestrial networks and extraterrestrial data transmission.
This development marks a significant step forward for the European quantum ecosystem. By moving toward TRL 5, the project transitions theoretical quantum capabilities into tangible, deployable hardware. The successful execution of this contract will enhance the reliability of quantum-secured data transmission across vast distances, both on Earth and in orbit.
