Defining 2-group symmetries on lattices and extracting their anomalies

arXiv:2610.37745v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Ordinary $0$-form symmetries $G$ can mix with $1$-form symmetries $\Pi_2$ to form a $2$-group $\mathcal{G}$. We give a concrete lattice definition for a class of finite $2$-group symmetries in terms of local relations among symmetry operators. These relations identify the Postnikov class $[\rho]\in H^3(BG,\Pi_2)$ that characterizes the mixing. We develop a method to extract anomalies of these symmetries in one spatial dimension by restricting sy...

arXiv:2610.37745v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Ordinary $0$-form symmetries $G$ can mix with $1$-form symmetries $\Pi_2$ to form a $2$-group $\mathcal{G}$. We give a concrete lattice definition for a class of finite $2$-group symmetries in terms of local relations among symmetry operators. These relations identify the Postnikov class $[\rho]\in H^3(BG,\Pi_2)$ that characterizes the mixing. We develop a method to extract anomalies of these symmetries in one spatial dimension by restricting symmetry operations to an interval and comparing their composition near its endpoints. We also construct explicit qubit symmetry actions in $d=1,2,3$ spatial dimensions for a $2$-group with $G=\Pi_2=\mathbb{Z}_2$. These actions share the same nontrivial Postnikov class but include both anomaly-free and anomalous realizations. Their cohomological anomalies are classified by $H^{d+2}(B\mathcal G,U(1))$, which is $\mathbb{Z}_2$ for $d=1,2$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ for $d=3$, and our constructions realize every class in these dimensions. Our results connect higher-group symmetry and its anomalies to concrete lattice operations, providing a microscopic framework for studying anomalous symmetries.

Invertible subalgebras for chiral semion topological order

Chiral topological order is incompatible with strictly two-dimensional local commuting-projector Hamiltonians on finite-dimensional tensor-product Hilbert spaces. Invertible subalgebras (ISAs) provide an alternative framework. We construct an ISA supporting chiral semions, together with its anti-semion commutant, on a square lattice with one qubit per edge. We give explicit non-Pauli generators for both algebras and prove that together they gene...

One-dimensional quantum Gibbs states in constant circuit depth

We prove that the Gibbs state of any spin chain can be exactly decomposed into a mixture of product states over contiguous blocks of qubits with bounded length, at any constant temperature. As a consequence, any such Gibbs state can be prepared by local unitary circuits of constant depth, with efficient classical preprocessing. We place strong limits on the spatial structure of thermal entanglement: both the entanglement depth and entanglement w...

Fast GHZ encoding with $1-o(1)$ fidelity

We prove that $(1-o(1))$-fidelity $N$-qubit Greenberger--Horne--Zeilinger (GHZ) encoding can be performed in time $O(\log N/N)$ using all-to-all 2-local Hamiltonians with bounded 2-qubit interaction terms. This saturates the theoretical lower bound $\Omega(\log N/N)$, and by rescaling, also saturates the lower bound on signaling time for Hamiltonians with power-law interaction strengths $1/r^\gamma$, $\gamma<d$ in dimension $d$. The protocol use...

The Pauli Probability Spectrum Carries the Pure-State Quantum Fisher Metric

Stabilizer R\'enyi entropies compress the distribution of squared Pauli expectation values of a pure quantum state into scalar measures of nonstabilizerness. Here we show that, before this compression, the distribution has a remarkably simple information-geometric structure. For any smooth pure-state family of $N$ qubits, its classical Fisher information matrix is exactly twice the quantum Fisher information matrix of the state at every regular...
