IonQ has officially completed its acquisition of SkyWater Technology, a strategic move that signals a significant shift toward vertical integration within the quantum computing industry. By absorbing the largest exclusively U.S.-based semiconductor foundry, IonQ is positioning itself to control the entire production lifecycle—from initial chip design and fabrication to advanced packaging and final commercialization.
The acquisition is designed to bolster IonQ’s infrastructure by providing direct access to domestic semiconductor manufacturing. According to Niccolo de Masi, Chairman and CEO of IonQ, the move is intended to solidify the company's role as a merchant supplier and ecosystem enabler. By securing a scalable, domestic supply chain, IonQ aims to accelerate the development of its next-generation quantum computers while maintaining high standards of manufacturing precision.
SkyWater will continue to operate as a subsidiary under its original name, led by CEO Thomas Sonderman. This arrangement ensures that SkyWater can maintain its existing service commitments to public and private sector clients while expanding its portfolio to include a broader range of quantum sensing and networking solutions. The integration is expected to provide a seamless pathway for moving quantum technologies from the laboratory into large-scale industrial applications.
From a technical standpoint, the merger addresses a critical bottleneck in the quantum hardware stack: the reliable production of specialized chips. By integrating SkyWater’s foundry capabilities, IonQ can optimize the manufacturing of quantum processors for diverse environments, including land, sea, air, and space. This vertical integration is expected to enhance the speed and precision of quantum hardware deployment.
The transaction was finalized following regulatory approvals, with SkyWater shareholders receiving a combination of cash and IonQ common stock. The combined entity is scheduled to hold its second-quarter earnings call in August 2026, marking the beginning of a new era of integrated quantum manufacturing and infrastructure development.
