Quantum computing startup QpiAI has opened a manufacturing facility in Bengaluru capable of fabricating superconducting quantum processors, part of an effort to bring more of its quantum hardware development and production under one roof.
The Bengaluru-based company on Monday inaugurated the second phase of its quantum processing unit, or QPU, manufacturing facility in Jakkur, according to YourStory . QpiAI said the eight-inch fabrication facility can currently produce flip-chip superconducting processors with as many as 128 qubits.
The company plans to complete a third phase in 2027 that it says will give the facility the capacity to fabricate processors containing as many as 10,000 physical qubits. That target would represent a significant increase in scale, although reaching a given qubit count alone does not establish the performance or commercial usefulness of a quantum computer.
QpiAI founder and CEO Nagendra Nagaraja said that the company plans to handle the full device manufacturing process at the facility, including lithography, etching, patterning, assembly and packaging, according to YourStory, a Bengaluru-based Indian digital business and technology publication focused heavily on startups, entrepreneurs, venture capital, innovation and India’s technology ecosystem.
The strategy reflects a broader challenge facing quantum hardware companies. Quantum processors require specialized materials, fabrication processes, packaging and control systems that differ in important ways from those used for conventional computer chips. Nagaraja told YourStory that existing semiconductor foundries cannot manufacture all of the specialized devices QpiAI requires, prompting the company to develop its own capabilities.
“Quantum computing today is being held back because there is not enough innovation in manufacturing,” Nagaraja said, according to YourStory.
Building Several Types of Qubits
QpiAI plans to use the foundry to manufacture quantum processors as well as peripheral chips and sensors. The company also intends to conduct research on photonic and semiconductor qubits while focusing its production systems on superconducting transmon and fluxonium-derived qubits.
Transmons and fluxonium devices are types of superconducting qubits made from electrical circuits that display quantum behavior when cooled to temperatures close to absolute zero. They are among several competing approaches being developed by quantum computing companies and research groups.
The company has fabricated four processors to date, according to QpiAI. Its transmon-based systems include the eight-qubit QVidya, 25-qubit Indus and 64-qubit Kaveri, as well as fabricating Yukti, a nine-qubit processor based on its variation of fluxonium technology.
According to QpiAI , Yukti has shown promise for developing error-corrected logical qubits. A logical qubit combines multiple physical qubits with error-correction methods designed to protect quantum information from noise and errors.
The logical qubit development ties in with QpiAI ‘s longer-term 10,000-qubit manufacturing goal. Physical qubit counts are only one measure of a quantum system. Error rates, coherence, connectivity, gate performance and the ability to operate large numbers of qubits together can be equally important. Building useful fault-tolerant quantum computers is expected to require combining many physical qubits into smaller numbers of more reliable logical qubits.
QpiAI described the Bengaluru operation as the largest quantum foundry of its kind in Asia. The facility includes Class 100 and Class 1,000 clean-room areas and is expected to receive additional manufacturing equipment as it expands.
Investment and Supply Chain
The foundry is part of a 70,000-square-foot QpiAI research and development center that also contains QPU testing and quantum-solutions development facilities, according to YourStory. Nagaraja said most of the center is operational, with the remaining portion expected to be commissioned in 2027.
QpiAI has invested about $20 million to $25 million in the facility and expects to invest another $10 million to $15 million, Nagaraja told YourStory.
About 20% of the inputs used by the company are currently imported, he told YourStory. QpiAI intends to localize more of its supply chain as production increases, particularly where dependence on imported components could constrain manufacturing.
The company’s ability to move from relatively small experimental processors to devices containing thousands of qubits will depend on more than fabrication capacity. Yield, consistency, qubit performance, packaging, control electronics and error correction become increasingly difficult as quantum systems grow. QpiAI did not provide detailed performance specifications or manufacturing yields for the proposed 10,000-qubit processors in the information reported by YourStory.
From Quantum Chips to Computing Centers
The manufacturing expansion is also intended to support QpiAI ‘s proposed Quantum Supremacy Centres, or QSCs, which would combine error-corrected quantum processors with clusters of artificial intelligence chips.
QpiAI ultimately plans to connect multiple quantum processors to construct larger systems. Its first proposed QSC would occupy a 10-acre site with about 300,000 square feet of built space, according to the company. QpiAI also plans four centers outside India, although it has not disclosed their locations, investment requirements or schedules.
Nagaraja described the proposed centers as “quantum AI factories” intended to develop commercial applications capable of demonstrating quantum advantage. Quantum advantage generally refers to a quantum computer performing a useful computational task better than available conventional computers.
Demonstrating that advantage on commercially important problems remains one of the central challenges facing the quantum computing industry. Today’s systems are still constrained by errors and limited scale, and researchers continue to work on hardware improvements and quantum error correction before large fault-tolerant machines can be deployed.
QpiAI plans to target the Middle East, Southeast Asia and the U.S. as initial export markets, Nagaraja told YourStory.
Speaking at the facility’s inauguration, HCL co-founder Ajai Chowdhry said QpiAI ‘s combination of artificial intelligence and quantum computing could position the company for a future in which large conventional computing infrastructure operates alongside quantum systems.
Chowdhry chairs the Mission Governing Board of India’s National Quantum Mission and said QpiAI was the first company backed through the mission’s startup program.
Founded in 2019, QpiAI develops quantum processors, control systems, software and applications combining quantum computing and AI. The Bengaluru-headquartered company also has offices in Finland, the U.S. and Singapore.
QpiAI raised $32 million in a Series A funding round in 2025 led by Avataar Ventures and the National Quantum Mission. It was one of eight startups selected for support under the Indian government program.
