Fidelity losses now scale quadratically with damping strength, unlike conventional quantum error correction which suffers linear degradation under generalized amplitude-damping noise. This advance stems from a new framework, probabilistic approximate quantum error correction, combining flexible approximations with post-selection techniques. A five-qubit permutation-invariant code demonstrates this improved performance against real-world hardware imperfections.
