Until now, calculating how quantum detectors respond to intense spacetime distortions demanded approximations valid only when interactions were feeble. New analysis demonstrates complete responses beyond this limit, modelling Unruh-DeWitt detectors interacting with powerful gravitational or electromagnetic waves without relying on perturbative methods. These calculations reveal that even substantial plane waves suppress detector excitations from its ground state.
