Keith Hengen, an associate professor of biology in WashU Arts & Sciences, is applying research on the brain’s computational power to develop quantum sensors for next-generation computing. The project, “Superconducting Polychronous Computation Near Criticality,” received $750,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy to explore how balancing a system at the “tipping point between order and chaos” may increase sensor accuracy and reduce energy consumption.
