Insider Brief

  • Bechtle will provide the German Aerospace Center’s Quantum Computing Initiative with cloud access to IQM ’s superconducting quantum computers until June 2027, expanding its research resources and technology portfolio.
  • The agreement enables application teams to develop and run quantum algorithms and compare superconducting systems with other quantum computing technologies.
  • Bechtle will manage platform accounts and support, while a dedicated classical server at IQM ’s Munich data center will support hybrid quantum and classical workloads.

PRESS RELEASE — Under a new framework agreement, Bechtle is providing German Aerospace Center ’s Quantum Computing Initiative (DLR QCI) with cloud-based computing time on quantum systems from IQM Quantum Computers. This expands the DLR QCI’s quantum computing resources for its application teams, complements its existing technology portfolio, and creates additional opportunities for comparison with quantum systems already in place. The IQM Resonance cloud platform supports efficient use through seamless user and group management and provides the foundation for planning, developing, running, and managing quantum algorithms across the entire development process.

“ Our offering combines technological excellence with the flexibility that benefits the DLR QCI in its quantum computing applications. This is how we support the customer in expanding its research infrastructure, while also strengthening the technological sovereignty of Germany and Europe in international competition, ” says Christian Behma, Managing Director of Bechtle IT System House Bonn.

The DLR QCI brings together start-ups, industry, research, and the public sector in a strong ecosystem for sovereign, competitive quantum computing. To this end, it commissions companies to develop quantum computers, quantum algorithms, and relevant use cases. The focus is on practical application scenarios, for example in materials research, aerospace, mobility, and security. The DLR QCI is made possible by funding from the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space.

“With our production-grade superconducting quantum computers, the DLR QCI gains direct access to powerful quantum systems operated in Europe and backed by deep technical expertise and practical support. Together these give the DLR QCI a future-proof package for its work,” says Jan Goetz, CEO and co-founder of IQM Quantum Computers .

Through its Competence Center Quantum Technologies, Bechtle IT System House Bonn is responsible for setting up and managing user accounts on the IQM Resonance platform for the DLR QCI, as well as providing computing time on IQM’s superconducting quantum computing hardware. Bechtle thereby ensures secure and efficient operation, along with comprehensive support from expert teams at both the system house and the manufacturer.

The DLR QCI relies on technological diversity and commissions companies to develop and use quantum computers based on a range of technologies, including ion traps, neutral atoms, photons, and NV centers. The superconducting quantum systems now add a further key technology to this portfolio.

Bechtle and IQM are continuously expanding the partnership they entered in 2024. As part of this collaboration, the DLR QCI will receive cloud-based access to IQM’s quantum systems until June 2027 and will additionally benefit from dedicated classical computing power at the IQM data center in Munich. The server, provided exclusively for the DLR QCI, supports hybrid workloads, among other things, as well as quantum algorithms that combine high-performance computing systems and quantum computing resources.
