Exhaustive Construction of Generalized Parent Hamiltonians for Matrix Product States

arXiv:2611.00203v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Characterizing local Hamiltonians that host interesting many-body states as eigenstates has been an important problem in quantum many-body physics. arXiv:2611.00203v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Characterizing local Hamiltonians that host interesting many-body states as eigenstates has been an important problem in quantum many-body physics. For matrix product states (MPS), there is a well-known construction of parent Hamiltonians that have the MPS as the frustration-free ground state. However, recent results on quantum many-body scars have shown that such a construction does not exhaust all possible Hamiltonians that have the MPS as an eigenstate. In this work, we develop an exhaustive construction of generalized parent Hamiltonians that have a given translation-invariant MPS as an eigenstate. These go beyond the conventional projector-based construction of frustration-free parent Hamiltonians, where each local Hermitian term has the MPS as an eigenstate, by allowing non-Hermitian telescoping terms that cancel out with periodic boundary conditions (PBC). We derive a local tensor equation that establishes a correspondence between inequivalent classes of generalized parent Hamiltonians, i.e., those that cannot be related using linear combinations with frustration-free Hamiltonians, and the MPS transfer matrix spectrum. We illustrate the connection to intrinsic physical properties, including non-Abelian symmetries and zero correlation length, and further extend this construction to block-injective MPS. Our framework hence provides a systematic bridge between generalized parent Hamiltonians and the local structure of quantum states.

Defining 2-group symmetries on lattices and extracting their anomalies

Ordinary $0$-form symmetries $G$ can mix with $1$-form symmetries $\Pi_2$ to form a $2$-group $\mathcal{G}$. We give a concrete lattice definition for a class of finite $2$-group symmetries in terms of local relations among symmetry operators. These relations identify the Postnikov class $[\rho]\in H^3(BG,\Pi_2)$ that characterizes the mixing. We develop a method to extract anomalies of these symmetries in one spatial dimension by restricting sy...

Invertible subalgebras for chiral semion topological order

Chiral topological order is incompatible with strictly two-dimensional local commuting-projector Hamiltonians on finite-dimensional tensor-product Hilbert spaces. Invertible subalgebras (ISAs) provide an alternative framework. We construct an ISA supporting chiral semions, together with its anti-semion commutant, on a square lattice with one qubit per edge. We give explicit non-Pauli generators for both algebras and prove that together they gene...

Exact Operator Complexity Measures from Random Matchgate Unitaries

Matchgate circuits describe classically tractable dynamics in a physically relevant setting while nonetheless exhibiting features characteristic of complex quantum systems, such as high amounts of magic. This invites the broader question: to what extent are typical complexity measures saturated under trivial dynamics? Here, we address this by studying the behaviour of different Heisenberg-picture complexity measures in random matchgate ensembles...

One-dimensional quantum Gibbs states in constant circuit depth

We prove that the Gibbs state of any spin chain can be exactly decomposed into a mixture of product states over contiguous blocks of qubits with bounded length, at any constant temperature. As a consequence, any such Gibbs state can be prepared by local unitary circuits of constant depth, with efficient classical preprocessing. We place strong limits on the spatial structure of thermal entanglement: both the entanglement depth and entanglement w...
