European technology group GMV is expanding its quantum technology efforts across computing, communications, space, sensing and cybersecurity. It’s a portfolio approach that positions the company as an integrator of emerging quantum systems rather than a developer focused on a single type of quantum hardware.
The privately held technology company said in a blog post outlining its expanding quantum technology efforts that it has built capabilities ranging from quantum and quantum-inspired algorithms to quantum key distribution, satellite-based secure communications and quantum sensing. GMV is also working on the transition to post-quantum cryptography, which is designed to protect conventional computer systems against potential attacks from future quantum computers.
The portfolio reflects a broader approach to quantum technology that extends beyond the more common types of quantum tech, such as quantum computing. GMV , which has worked with quantum computing since 2021, is increasingly looking at how different quantum technologies can be incorporated into existing computing, communications and critical infrastructure.
The strategy also draws on GMV ‘s established businesses. Founded in 1984, the company has more than 4,000 employees and operates across space, defense and security, cybersecurity, transportation, financial services, healthcare and other industries. It reported total income of about 510 million euros in 2025, with 75% of revenue coming from international markets, according to the company .
Rather than expecting quantum computers to replace conventional systems, GMV said it expects quantum processors to operate alongside high-performance computing and artificial intelligence. That view has shaped several of its research and integration projects.
Testing Quantum Computing on Industrial Problems
One of GMV ‘s largest quantum computing efforts is CUCO , a Spanish research program led by the company that has tested quantum and quantum-inspired algorithms against problems in several industries.
The project has examined applications including identifying solar power plants in satellite imagery, forecasting wind conditions, valuing financial derivatives and designing catalysts, according to GMV .
Quantum-inspired algorithms use mathematical ideas associated with quantum computing but run on conventional computers. Such techniques offer companies a way to investigate potential quantum approaches without waiting for more powerful quantum processors.
GMV is also pursuing Q-MIND , an initiative examining the combination of quantum computing, AI and advanced information processing. The effort reflects growing interest in hybrid computing systems in which quantum processors handle selected parts of a larger calculation while conventional computers perform the rest.
The company has established relationships with quantum hardware providers IBM and D-Wave and has worked with specialized platforms and quantum emulation infrastructure. Those connections give GMV access to different types of quantum computing rather than tying its development work to a single hardware architecture.
GMV reports it has also participated in integrating a quantum computer with MareNostrum 5 , the Barcelona Supercomputing Center’s large-scale supercomputer. The company said its role included providing conventional computing systems, networking infrastructure, remote access services and user support.
That work highlights an emerging role for companies such as GMV . As quantum processors are increasingly installed alongside supercomputers, organizations will need software, networking and systems expertise to connect quantum hardware with conventional computing infrastructure.
GMV could be seen as taking a measured view of the technology’s current capabilities. The company said quantum annealing, a specialized approach primarily aimed at optimization problems, is showing promising results for some applications. Quantum machine learning, by contrast, still depends on substantial improvements in hardware.
The company is also exploring tensor networks and other quantum-inspired approaches that can be run on conventional computers. GMV said it is evaluating where quantum or quantum-inspired methods can address existing limitations and produce measurable benefits.
The work does not suggest that GMV or its partners have achieved a broad quantum computational advantage over the best conventional methods. Instead, the projects are aimed at identifying problems where emerging quantum approaches could eventually become useful and at building the infrastructure needed to incorporate them.
Extending Quantum Technology Into Communications and Space
GMV ‘s quantum strategy extends beyond computing into communications, an area where some quantum technologies are closer to deployment.
The company is developing QuKee , an initiative focused on strengthening communications security with quantum technology. It has also formed a strategic partnership with LuxQuanta , a Barcelona-based company developing quantum key distribution technology for fiber-optic networks.
Quantum key distribution, or QKD, uses principles of quantum physics to allow two parties to establish encryption keys while detecting attempts to intercept the key exchange. Unlike post-quantum cryptography, which relies on new mathematical algorithms running on conventional computers, QKD requires specialized physical infrastructure.
GMV said its work with LuxQuanta combines its expertise in cybersecurity, encryption-key management and space systems with LuxQuanta’s terrestrial QKD technology.
The companies are targeting applications connected to EuroQCI , the European Union’s planned quantum communications infrastructure. Europe is seeking to develop terrestrial and satellite links capable of securing sensitive government and critical infrastructure communications.
Space is becoming an important part of that effort.
GMV is participating in Eagle-1, Caramuel and SAGA, European projects involving satellite-based quantum communications and QKD. Eagle-1 is focused on demonstrating quantum key distribution from low Earth orbit, while Caramuel involves a system operating from geostationary orbit. SAGA is connected to the space component of Europe’s broader EuroQCI infrastructure.
GMV is also involved in HydRON and the European Data Relay System, or EDRS, which use optical communications to transfer data between satellites and ground infrastructure. Those programs are not themselves necessarily quantum communications systems, but optical links and related space infrastructure can play a role in the development of future secure communications networks.
The combination gives GMV a position across both terrestrial and space-based communications infrastructure.
Quantum Sensors Target Navigation and Earth Observation
A third part of GMV ‘s portfolio involves quantum sensing, where quantum effects can be used to make highly precise measurements of motion, time, gravity and other physical properties.
The company’s QUANTICO project combines quantum measurement techniques with QKD to investigate navigation systems designed to operate more reliably when conventional satellite navigation signals are disrupted.
GMV said it has developed a prototype capable of positioning accuracy of up to 6 centimeters without relying on traditional global navigation satellite systems, or GNSS.
The ability to navigate without continuous access to satellite signals has potential applications in defense, aviation, transportation and other environments where GPS or other satellite navigation signals can be blocked, jammed or spoofed.
GMV is also involved in CARIOQA, a European project aimed at demonstrating a quantum accelerometer in space.
The planned instrument would use highly precise quantum measurements to detect small variations in Earth’s gravitational field. Such measurements could eventually contribute to Earth science and other applications requiring detailed gravitational data.
Preparing Conventional Systems for the Quantum Threat
GMV ‘s fourth major area of quantum activity is cybersecurity, including preparation for cryptographically relevant quantum computers that could eventually undermine widely used public-key encryption systems.
Today’s quantum computers are not capable of breaking commonly used encryption at meaningful scale. However, sufficiently powerful fault-tolerant quantum computers could eventually threaten algorithms used to secure communications, financial transactions, government systems and other digital infrastructure.
That prospect has led governments and companies to begin moving toward post-quantum cryptography, or PQC. These algorithms run on conventional computers but are designed around mathematical problems believed to resist attacks from both classical and quantum machines.
GMV said the transition involves more than replacing individual encryption algorithms. Organizations also need to identify where cryptography is used, redesign parts of their technology architecture, update key-management systems and establish the ability to replace cryptographic methods as security requirements change.
The concern is particularly significant for information that must remain confidential for many years. Attackers could collect encrypted information today and retain it until more powerful quantum computers become available, an approach commonly called “harvest now, decrypt later.”
GMV ‘s cybersecurity, defense and critical-systems businesses give the company a potential route for applying post-quantum security work to existing customers and infrastructure.
The company’s expanding portfolio ultimately amounts to a bet that the quantum industry will not develop around a single technology or a single moment when quantum computing becomes commercially useful.
Quantum computers, quantum-inspired algorithms, QKD networks, quantum sensors and post-quantum cryptography are developing at different rates and solve different problems. GMV ‘s approach is to build expertise across those technologies while connecting them with conventional computing, communications and infrastructure.
