Long-range entangled criticality from coherent errors

arXiv:2611.03811v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We find that coherent error can induce a phase transition from the clean surface code phase into an extended long-range entangled critical regime with diverging Markov length. To demonstrate this, we establish two general results of independent interest. The first relates topology and quantum information to mixed-state entanglement: we show that when a noise channel acting on a topological code preserves a higher-form symmetry and nonzero cohere...

arXiv:2611.03811v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We find that coherent error can induce a phase transition from the clean surface code phase into an extended long-range entangled critical regime with diverging Markov length. To demonstrate this, we establish two general results of independent interest. The first relates topology and quantum information to mixed-state entanglement: we show that when a noise channel acting on a topological code preserves a higher-form symmetry and nonzero coherent information, the noisy state for generic logical input is long-range entangled. The second generalizes the local recovery construction based on finite Markov length to any locally parameterized family, thus encompassing local Lindbladian evolution, coherent errors followed by syndrome dephasing, and thermal states. We apply these results to the honeycomb surface code, in which we find an extended long-range entangled critical regime that is a quasi-long-ranged counterpart of 1-form strong-to-weak spontaneous symmetry breaking. As a byproduct of these studies, we relate the conditional mutual information to conductance in a Majorana network model.

Lee-Yang zeros of modulated XY spin chains with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction: zero-contour topology and quantum phase-diagram reconstruction

We investigate the Lee--Yang zeros (LYZ) of inhomogeneous anisotropic XY spin chains with Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya (DM) interactions in the complex transverse-field plane, focusing on their fundamental connection to quantum phase transitions. We systematically study uniform chains, period-2 and period-3 modulated chains, and Fibonacci quasiperiodic chains of lengths 5 and 8. As the DM coupling strength $D$ increases, the LYZ exhibit qualitatively...

Lieb-Schultz-Mattis Constraints for Quantum Channels: A Spacetime-Duality View

Quantum anomalies strongly constrain the possible behavior of many-body systems. A prime example is the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorem, which relates UV symmetry and filling constraints to IR features of the energy spectrum and ground-state structure. Here, we ask how LSM constraints shape dynamical signatures and temporal correlations in open quantum systems. Using a spacetime duality, we show that the Liouvillian of a $d$-dimensional repeat...

Mixed-State Symmetry-Protected Topology and Strong-to-Weak Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in a Superconducting Qubit Array

We experimentally investigate how symmetry-protected topological order in a one-dimensional cluster state is transformed by measurement and decoherence in a five-qubit superconducting array. We first characterize the state's nonlocal string order and show that controlled dephasing selectively suppresses one symmetry sector while leaving the other robust, consistent with average symmetry-protected topological order. We then measure one sublattice...

Invertible subalgebras for chiral semion topological order

Chiral topological order is incompatible with strictly two-dimensional local commuting-projector Hamiltonians on finite-dimensional tensor-product Hilbert spaces. Invertible subalgebras (ISAs) provide an alternative framework. We construct an ISA supporting chiral semions, together with its anti-semion commutant, on a square lattice with one qubit per edge. We give explicit non-Pauli generators for both algebras and prove that together they gene...
