Magic in Grover's Algorithm and the Role of Oracle Synthesis

arXiv:2610.37772v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Grover's algorithm is a textbook example of quantum advantage, providing a quadratic query speedup over classical methods for unstructured search. In this Letter, we characterize the non-stabilizerness, or magic, developed throughout Grover's protocol, quantifying quantum complexity with respect to the efficiently simulable stabilizer states. First, we compute the compilation-independent magic at the end of each Grover iteration, deriving an analytic prediction for the stabilizer R\'enyi entropy and proving that it remains intensive as the system size grows. We then investigate the magic overhead due to decomposing the circuit into elementary gates. When the solution to the search problem is known, we show that an efficient decomposition exists that keeps magic bounded despite using an extensive number of Toffoli gates. In contrast, agnostic implementations are expected to generate volume-law non-stabilizerness, as we confirm for the 3-SAT problem, which rules out efficient simulation by stabilizer-based methods in practically relevant cases. Our findings clarify the growth of magic in Grover's algorithm and the role of solution-awareness in its circuit compilation.

Fully quantum training of parametric circuits with Quantum Hamiltonian Descent

Parametric quantum circuits are usually trained by classical, local optimizers, which use the quantum computer only to evaluate the cost function, or its gradient, one point at a time. Quantum Hamiltonian Descent (QHD) takes a different route: in this quantum algorithm for continuous optimization, the parameters become the position of a quantum particle, with the cost function as its potential, and two time schedules control kinetic and potentia...

Polynomial-Time Classical Simulation of BosonSampling under Any Constant-Fraction Photon Loss

Understanding how photon loss changes the classical complexity of BosonSampling is central to assessing the robustness of near-term photonic quantum advantage. In this work, we present a polynomial-time classical simulation algorithm for lossy BosonSampling that applies whenever a constant fraction of the input photons survives. We consider the standard fixed-loss model, where $N$ input photons propagate through an $M$-mode interferometer and ex...

Exponentially Compressed and Garbage-Free Alias Sampling for Polynomial State Preparation

Coherent alias sampling implement an important subroutine for block encoding and qubitization based quantum simulation using quantum lookup table. Related constructions exploit data lookup and matrix structure to implement block encodings for use in quantum singular value transformation. For a state on $n$ qubits, constructing and storing the alias table requires both classical and quantum resources exponential in $n$. We show that when the ampl...

Probing the classical complexity of quantum dynamics experiments

A confluence of recent works has shown that many quantum circuits and dynamics are efficiently simulable by classical algorithms that track local information, even when conventional complexity measures such as the entanglement and magic are high. Here, we introduce a novel measure of complexity, the reactivity, to capture this new method of classical attack. Unlike conventional complexity measures, the reactivity does not capture a property of a...
