PRESS RELEASE — Swinburne University of Technology and IQM Quantum Computers , the global leader in superconducting quantum computers, are partnering to advance quantum science, technology, innovation and workforce development capability.
This new partnership will include collaborating in education, training, research engagement and technology development across Australia, Europe and the Indo-Pacific.
“Quantum technologies have the potential to transform industries and address some of the world’s most complex challenges,” says Swinburne ’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Professor Karen Hapgood .
“This partnership with IQM reflects our shared commitment to strengthen quantum expertise, expand learning opportunities and support the growth of a skilled workforce.”
The development of quantum technologies is a key priority for both Australia and Finland, and this partnership helps to foster the international pathway for collaboration. Swinburne ‘s quantum expertise in theory and experimentation along with IQM ‘s reputation in producing working quantum computers, will not only enable technology uplift, but will also advance quantum talent in both countries.
“Australia and Finland are both building real quantum capability, not just talking about it,” said IQM ‘s Chief Global Affairs Officer and co-founder, Juha Vartiainen.
“ Swinburne brings deep expertise in quantum theory and experimentation; we bring the experience of building and delivering working quantum computers. Together, that combination can accelerate quantum talent and technology in both countries.”
Potential areas of collaboration under this new partnership will include joint education and professional training in quantum computing, engineering and related technologies. Through internships, project-based education, industry engagement, workshops and access to IQM ‘s quantum computing platforms, students and researchers will have opportunities to build practical skills.
In addition, the partnership will also support collaborative research, technology translation and innovation, as well as staff, researcher and student exchanges between Swinburne and IQM , helping to advance the next generation of quantum talent.
The partnership was finalised after a delegation from Swinburne , representing Australia, attended the Finnish Quantum Days event in Jyväskylä, Finland. This was followed by a visit to IQM ’s production facility and assembly line in Espoo, which has the capacity to produce up to 30 quantum computers per year.
