University of California researchers optimized a silicon-germanium heterostructure design to achieve valley splittings of 5 meV, exceeding previously reported values and addressing a key challenge for scalable Si/SiGe spin qubits. This approach, utilizing a narrow quantum well, Ge spike, and Ge cap, aims to enable consistent initialization, operation, and readout of these qubits.
