This frozen fiber makes light and sound interact 1,000x more strongly

Freezing the liquid core of an optical fiber produced an extreme environment where light and sound interact more than 1,000 times more strongly than in ordinary fibers. Researchers used the effect to create optoacoustic memory, potentially paving the way for lower-energy photonic computers and advanced quantum technologies.

Realistic solid-state model brings fractons in quantum spin liquids closer to detection

Quasiparticles arise from the complex interaction of many particles in solids; for example, we describe lattice vibrations in crystals as phonons. Fractons are exotic quasiparticles that occur at the vertices of magnetic domain walls between different spin orders. What makes them special is that they are virtually immobile and can only be displaced by other fractons. In theory, this limited mobility could be exploited to robustly store quantum information.

'Rainbow-on-a-chip' could help unlock 6G networks and precision timing for quantum technologies

Loughborough University physicists and an international team have demonstrated that a grain-of-rice-sized microchip can be used to produce a spectrum of precisely spaced frequencies of light, which is then converted into multiple high-frequency electromagnetic signals known as millimeter waves.

A strange new quantum droplet can hold itself together

Two very different types of quantum particles may be able to form stable droplets that hold themselves together, challenging decades of conventional thinking. The prediction could soon be tested experimentally and may reveal an unexpectedly rich world of new quantum phases.

The HALO Engine: $\mathcal{O}(1)$-Step Compilation and Localized String Rupture for Lattice Gauge Theories on Quantum Hardware

Simulating the real-time dynamics of lattice gauge theories (LGTs) represents a challenge for near-term quantum computing. Standard digital simulations rely on Trotterization schemes where circuit depth scales proportionally with lattice size, inevitably colliding with the coherence limits of noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) hardware. To deal with this depth-scaling bottleneck, we introduce the Hardware-Aware Lattice Optimization (HALO) c...
